Who ıs Celsus?

Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, who was consul (one of the highest officials in Rome) in Rome in 92 AD, was the proconsul (governor) of the Asia Province, whose capital was Ephesus, between 105-107 AD.

Celsus Library, one of the most important structures of the Ancient City of Ephesus, was built by his son Gaius Julius Aquila in honor of Celsus between 110 and 135 AD.

Humans had begun inhabiting the area surrounding Ephesus by the Neolithic Age (about 6000 BC), as shown by evidence from excavations at the nearby höyük (artificial mounds known as tells) of Arvalya and Cukurici

Along with this inscription, it is seen that the same information is repeated in the inscription on the architrave on the first floor of the library facade.

"Asia proconsul 'ü Tiberius Iulius Celsus Polemaeanus için oğlu, consul Tiberius Iulius Celsus Polemaenus'un kendi serveti ile Celsus kütüphane binasını, bütün dekorasyonu ve sanat eserleri ve kitapları ile kurdu. Kütüphanenin korunması ve kitap alınması için 25.000 denarion 'u onun için (yani kütüphane) bir başlangıç olmak üzere miras bıraktı. Aquila 'nın mirasçıları onu tamamladılar ve vasiyete uygun olarak, bu yapı üç kez Asiarkhos olan Tiberius Claudius Ariston tarafından adandı" 

Architecture of the Library of Celsus

The Celsus Library, which has a facade with very rich architectural equipment, is 21 meters high and 17 meters high.
